International Boxing Federation bantamweight champion Emmanuel Rodriguez of Puerto Rico aims at a knockout victory in his title defense against top-ranked Ryosuke Nishida of Muto Boxing Gym on May 4 in Osaka as he held a public training at the city’s KWORLD3 Boxing Gym on May 1.
Rodriguez shows mitt-hitting practice
Soft-spoken Rodriguez, who arrived in Japan on Apr. 23, told reporters, ‘’I was able to get rid of jet lag completely. My weight reduction effort has been going smoothly since I only need to lose 4 pounds (some 1.8 kg) more. I was training hard in Mexico ever since this fight was decided in this past January.’’
The 31-year-old Rodriguez, a two-time IBF bantamweight champion, continued, ‘’I now know how to fight Nishida since I have worked out my fight plan with my trainers. While I am fighting away from home, I don’t need to worry about that. I am determined to earn a KO victory after showing a good fight.’’
After enough warm-up exercises, Rodriguez did shadow boxing and punching-mitt hitting. He then hit a drum-mitt held by Koki Kameda, a former world champion and the head of Kameda Promotion Co.
Nishida’s trainer Kosuke Takeichi, who watched Rodriguez’s training, said, ‘’He is a good champion as I had expected. Nishida, a southpaw, can upset him if he can move his body sufficiently.’’
The scheduled 12-rounder will be held at EDION Arena Osaka.
Rodriguez, who is making his first defense of the title he won by decisioning Melving Lopez of Nicaragua last August, has 22 wins, including 13 KOs, against two losses and one no decision.
For his part, the 27-year-old Nishida, who fought as an amateur during his high school and university days, is undefeated in his eight professional bouts, one by knockout.
Both International Boxing Federation bantamweight champion Emmanuel Rodriguez of Puerto Rico and top-ranked challenger Ryosuke Nishida of Muto Boxing Gym cleared the weigh-ins at an Osaka hotel on May 3, setting the stage for their title clash the following day at EDION Arena Osaka.

Top-ranked challenger Ryosuke Nishida of Muto Boxing Gym, scored a knockdown in the fourth round and went on to earn a unanimous decision over Emmanuel Rodriguez of Puerto Rico to wrest the International Boxing Federation bantamweight title on May 4 in Osaka.
New champion Nishida enjoys victory with his wife Sana
After the 12-round fight at EDION Arena Osaka, two of the three judges scored the fight 115-112 and the remaining one had it 117-110, all in favor of the 27-year-old Nishida.
The undefeated Nishida captured the title in his ninth professional bout, while the 31-year-old Rodriguez failed in his first defense of the title he won by decisioning Melving Lopez of Nicaragua last August.
The left-handed Nishida got off to a good start as he stuck out sharp right jabs and left hooks to the body and controlled the fight.
In the fourth stanza, Nishida, who fought as an amateur during his high-school and university days, landed a left hook to the liver at close quarters, sending Rodriguez crouching down for a mandatory eight count.
While Rodriguez fought back strongly in the middle of the round based on his favorite straight rights to the head, Nishida did not move back and exchanged blows with the Puerto Rican and ended the fight on top, although Nishida’s right eyelid was puffed up.
After the fight, Nishida said from the ring, ‘’I was planning to work my opponent’s body, and it worked out well. Though Rodriguez had a hunger to victory, I wanted to stick to my style of boxing. I want to say thank you to all those who supported me despite the fact I was viewed as an underdog. I will keep plugging away through my close consultation with my trainer Mr. (Kosuke) Takeichi.’’
With the victory, Nishida extended his unbeaten streak to nine, one by knockout. For his part, Rodriguez fell to a 22-3 win-loss tally with 13 KOs.
Toshiki Kawamitsu of Misako Boxing Gym, unleashing a barrage of left-and-right combinations, stopped top-ranked challenger Kosuke Ando of KG Yamato Boxing Gym in the sixth round to retain his Japanese light flyweight title in Tokyo on May 4.
Kawamitsu (R) overwhelms Ando with his power
It was the 28-year-old Kawamitsu’s first successful defense of the title he won from Toshimasa Ouchi of Himeji-Kinoshita Boxing Gym last December.
The technical knockout of the scheduled 10-rounder at Korakuen Hall came 2 minutes and 29 seconds into the round when Kawamitsu severely staggered Ando with a sizzling left hook to the head, prompting the referee to call off the fight immediately.
While both exchanged fierce blows from the first round, it was Kawamitsu who got the better of Ando by landing overhand rights and left hooks to the head and body.
With the win, Kawamitsu improved his record to 10 wins, including six knockouts, and a loss. The 31-year-old Ando, who failed to avenge his TKO loss to Kawamitsu in January 2021, fell to a 13-5 win-loss tally with six KOs.
Top-ranked challenger Ryota Toyoshima of Teiken Boxing Gym eked out a 10-round split decision over Shoki Sakai of Yokohama Hikari Boxing Gym and wrested the Japanese welterweight title on May 4 in Tokyo.
Toyoshima (L) beats Sakai by pressing forward
There were no knockdowns in the fight held at Korakuen Hall. With the loss, Sakai failed in his third defense of the title he captured in April last year.
It was the 33-year-old Sakai’s second straight loss to Toyoshima, 28, as he dropped a 12-round unanimous decision to him in the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation and the World Boxing Organization’s Asia-Pacific welterweight titles in December 2021.
In the day’s fight, Sakai was slightly ahead on points in the first five rounds with his variety of right blows. But Toyoshima began to press forward from the sixth round by working Sakai’s body at close quarters. But both failed to land decisive punches in the fight.
With the win, Toyoshima improved his record to 19 wins, including 11 knockouts, against three losses and a draw, while Sakai, who made his professional debut in Mexico, impaired to a 29-14-3 win-loss-draw tally.
