Top-ranked International Boxing Federation bantamweight Ryosuke Nishida of Muto Boxing Gym showed a fine form in his public sparring at the gym on Apr. 27 in preparation for his challenge to Emmanuel Rodriguez of Puerto Rico for the latter’s title on May 4 in Osaka Prefecture.
Nishida (R) eyes world title by fighting at his own pace
The left-handed Nishda did shadowboxing and mitt-hitting practice with his trainer Kosuke Takeichi as he had done some 200 rounds of sparring chiefly with Toyo University amateur boxers. The scheduled 12-rounder will be held at EDION Arena Osaka.
After watching the practice, Rodriguez’s trainer Jacobo Najar commended Nishida’s jabs and footwork, adding it will be a good fight.
The 27-year-old Nishida said, ‘’I think I can win the fight if I stick to my kind of boxing. True Rodriguez is an excellent boxer in terms of speed, power and technique. I want to pile up points by doing what my opponent doesn’t want me to.’’
‘’Unlike in my previous fights, (in which he wore black trunks) I will wear white-based trunks this time around just like I wore when I decisioned highly touted Shohei Omori (in his third professional bout in December 2020).’’

Nishida, who fought as an amateur during his high school and university days, is undefeated in his eight professional bouts, one by knockout. For his part, the 31-year-old Rodriguez has a 22-2 win-loss tally with one no decision. He has 13 KOs.
Rodriguez, who is making his first defense of the title he won by decisioning Melving Lopez of Nicaragua last August for the vacant title, was knocked out by Naoya ‘’The Monster’’ Inoue of Ohashi Boxing Gym in Glasgow in May 2019 in the semifinals of the World Boxing Super Series.

Undisputed world super bantamweight champion Naoya ‘’The Monster’’ Inoue of Ohashi Boxing Gym and the World Boxing Council’s top-ranked super bantamweight Luis Nery of Mexico weighed 57.0 kg (or 125. 67 pounds) and 56.6 kg, respectively on Apr. 29, both remaining within the parameters of the WBC’s uppermost limit before their showdown at Tokyo Dome on May 6, according to both sides.
The WBC rule has it that a boxer must weigh within 3 percent of the given weight limit a week before a title fight.
Since super bantamweight weight limit is 55.34 kg or 122 lbs, the upper limit at this time was 1. 66 kg, and each met a regulatory requirement.
The undefeated Inoue has 26 straight wins, including 23 knockouts. The left-handed Nery has a 35-1 win-loss tally with 27 KOs.
World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion Jason Moloney of Australia is anxiously waiting for his title defense against fifth-ranked Yoshiki Takei of Ohashi Boxing Gym on May 6 at Tokyo Dome and said he is happy to fight in Japan at such a big event.
Moloney shows shadowboxing in leisurely pace
Speaking before a group of reporters at Tokyo’s Teiken Boxing Gym during his public workout, which consisted of only a round of shadowboxing, Moloney said he has always wanted to fight in Japan.
It will be the 33-year-old Moloney’s second defense of the title he captured last May by decisioning Vincent Astrolabio of the Philippines for the vacant title.
Moloney cited his unsuccessful title challenge to Takei’s senior stablemate and then World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation bantamweight champion Naoya ‘’The Monster’’ Inoue in October 2020 in Las Vegas, Nevada, in which the Australian was knocked out in the seventh round, saying that fight gave him a chance to grow.
Moloney had a pair of Kadoebi Boxing Gym boxers, former Japanese bantamweight champion Seiya Tsutsumi and Jun Ikegawa, visit his Australian training camp this year to serve as sparring partners, along with Maccha Nakagawa of Spider Nemoto Gym in preparation for his fight with Takei.
Further, fellow Australian Bruno Tarimo, who was stopped in the 11th round by Takei in the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation super bantamweight title match in December 2022 in Tokyo, also served as Moloney’s sparring partner.
Commenting on Takei, 27, Moloney said Takei packs an explosive punch. He thinks Takei throws punches from a different angle. He will have to stay focused during the fight.
In this connection, Moloney’s trainer Angelo Haider, who also served as a trainer for Tarimo, said Since Takei was a former kickboxer and a tricky kind, they had to have a different kind of training for the upcoming fight.

Haider said Moloney’s strength is he can cope with any situation, and added the difference between the boxing career will make the difference. But Moloney fought a southpaw only once as a pro (He stopped Cris Paulino of the Philippines in the fifth round).
Moloney has a record of 27 wins, including 19 KOs, against two losses, while Takei is undefeated in his eight professional bouts, all by KO.
The fight will be one of the four world title fights at the dome, in which Naoya Inoue will defend his undisputed world super bantamweight titles against Luis Nery of Mexico as the main event of the extravaganza.
