Former two-weight world champion Luis Nery of Mexico arrived in Japan on Apr. 21 to challenge undisputed world super bantamweight champion Naoya ‘’The Monster’’ Inoue of Ohashi Boxing Gym for the latter’s titles on May 6 at Tokyo Dome.
Nery enters Japan by way of U.S.
The 29-year-old Nery, accompanied by his wife, three daughters and other persons concerned, arrived at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport amid numerous reporters at the airport.
It will be the first time for Nery to have a fight in Japan in about six years and two months.
In August 2017, Nery stopped then World Boxing Council bantamweight champion Shinsuke Yamanaka of Teiken Boxing Gym to become the champion, although Nery later tested positive for a banned substance. The WBC then ordered their rematch.
Japan Boxing Commission issued a shutdown order to Nery when he failed to make the bantamweight limit in his rematch with Yamanaka in March 2018. Though Nery beat Yamanaka in the fight, the title was left vacant. Nery then fought mainly in the United States and became the WBC world super bantamweight champion in September 2020.
Although Nery lost the title in his title unification fight with World Boxing Association champion Brandon Figueroa of the U.S. in May 2021, he came back and won in his last four bouts, three by KO.
In February this year, JBC approved the license to fight in Japan for the WBC’s top-ranked super bantamweight Nery, which had been banned after his second fight with Yamanaka. It paved the way for Nery to fight with Inoue at the dome.
Asked about his condition, the 29-year-old Nery said, ‘’I came to Japan earlier than usual so that I can get over my jet lag and get used to the (Japanese) weather.
Nery said he has no weight-making problems, adding, ‘’I have been training myself hard for the last five months. True Naoya is a talented boxer with speed and power. But I don’t think he is the No. 1 in the pound for pound rank.’’ Inoue is currently ranked second in the Ring magazine’s PFP rankings.
‘’But if mass communications consider Inoue to be the No. 1, I would be happy that way because I can fight with the No. 1 boxer. Though I respect him, I am not afraid of him. Rather, I am determined to knock him out,’’ Nery added.
The left-handed Nery has a record of 35 wins, including 27 KOs, against a loss. The 31-year-old Inoue has 26 straight wins, 23 by KO.
Jayson Vayson of the Philippines pounded out a 10-round unanimous decision over 10th-ranked challenger Takeru Inoue of Muto Boxing Gym to retain his World Boxing Organization’s Asia-Pacific light flyweight title on Apr. 21 in Osaka.
Inoue (R) gives in to Vayson’s power
It was the 25-year-old Vayson’s first successful defense of the title he captured from Ryuya Yamanaka of Shinsei Boxing Gym last December.
While there were no knockdowns in the fight held at Sumiyoshi Ward Center, it was Vayson who threw more punches to the head and body and ended the fight on top.
With the win, Vayson improved his record to 12 wins, including five knockouts, against a loss and a draw with one no contest, whereas the 25-year-old Inoue, a former policeman at Osaka Prefectural Police, suffered his first loss after winning his first four bouts, two by KO, after turning pro in October 2022. Inoue fought as an amateur boxer during his high-school and university days.
World Boxing Association super flyweight champion Kazuto Ioka of Shisei Boxing Gym will face International Boxing Federation super flyweight kingpin Fernando Martinez of Argentina on July 7 in Tokyo in the title unification fight as they both held a joint press conference at a Tokyo hotel on Apr. 22.
Ioka (L) and Martinez
The scheduled 12-rounder will be held at Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena under the banner of LIFETIME BOXING FIGHTS 22.
While the 35-year-old Ioka had wanted to fight with World Boxing Council super flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada of Mexico next, he said, ‘’I have always wanted to fight with Martinez as an option for the failure to face Estrada. Since the title unification fight is special to me.’’
Ioka, who suffered his first defeat as a professional boxer when he was decisioned by then IBF flyweight champion Amnat Ruenroeng of Thailand in 2014, continues, ‘’I want to capture a championship belt concerned with the IBF.’’ An IBF title is the only title Ioka has not yet gotten among the titles of the four major world sanctioning bodies.
‘’I don’t think I can stop him unless I overwhelm him at close quarters, which is his favorite distance. I hope I can knock him out in the end.’’ Ioka continued. If Ioka goes through the fight, he will to continue to seek a fight with Estrada.
The undefeated Martinez, who is making his third defense of the title he won from Jerwin Ancajas of the Philippines in February 2022, said, ‘’I myself have always wanted to have this fight. I like Ioka’s fighting style. I will not shy away from my opponent. Rather, I will fight with my opponent head-on. I will show the kind of fight our spectators can go home satisfied and bring his championship belt back to Argentine.’’
Ioka has a record of 31 wins, including 16 KOs, against two losses and a draw. For his part, the 32-year-old Martinez has 16 straight wins, nine by KO.
Challenger Luis Nery of Mexico said Naoya ‘’The Monster’’ Inoue is ‘’overrated’’ before his public workout amid a large number of reporters at Tokyo’s Teiken Boxing Gym on Apr. 23 in preparation for his fight with undisputed world super bantamweight champion Inoue of Ohashi Boxing Gym on May 6 at Tokyo Dome.
Nery show mitt-hitting practice
The left-handed Nery and his trainer Samir Rosano answered questions from the press before his training, and Nery said, ‘’When I came to Tokyo before (to fight with Shinsuke Yamanaka of Teiken gym), it was cold. But this time it’s warm, which is good to reduce my weight. I am 10 times or 20 times bettered prepared than before.’’
Nery, a former two-weight world champion, said he currently weighs 57.6 kg (127 lbs), 2.3 kg above the super bantamweight limit.
Asked about his impression of Inoue, Nery said, ‘’He is a great boxer. But I think he is overrated. He is not a kind of boxer like (superstar) basketball player Michael Jordan.’’ In this connection, Nery cited the fact that Inoue needed 10 rounds to knockout Marlon Tapales (of the Philippines in the super bantamweight title unification fight last December).
Concerning what he thinks of Inoue’s weak points, Nery said, ‘’I found several and have worked on them. He lacks not only his defense capability but also other things.’’
According to Rosano, they have received information about Inoue from Inoue’s Mexican sparring partners.
‘’I know the upcoming fight will be a tough fight for me and Inoue. While each has a chance to win. I am a Mexican and am ready to die in the ring by showing everything I have in my arsenals.’’
Shingo Inoue, Naoya’s father and trainer, said after watching his shadowboxing and a round of mitt-hitting practice, ‘’His wild boxing is within the scope of our assumption. His comments were ordinary just like any other boxer. We don’t know if it will become a tough fight or an easy fight until the fight beegins’’
The 29-year-old Nery has a record of 35 wins, including 27 KOs, against a loss. The 31-year-old Inoue has 26 straight wins, 23 by KO.
Hard-hitting southpaw Suzumi Takayama of Watanabe Boxing Gym, unleashing strong rights, stopped top-ranked Akio Furutani of Muto Boxing Gym to retain his Japanese super flyweight title on Apr. 25 in Tokyo.
Takayama scores knockdown in third round
The technical knockout of the scheduled 10-rounder at Korakuen Hall came 1 minute and 31 seconds when the undefeated Takayama dropped Furutani with a right hook to the head for the second knockdown of the round, which prompted the referee to call off the fight without bothering to count.
The 27-year-old Takayama scored the first knockdown of the round with a straight left to the body followed by a right hook to the head.
It was Takayama’s second defense of the title he won by stopping Ryusei Kawaura of Misako Boxing Gym for the vacant title last June.
While the 26-year-old Furutani got off to a good start by landing straight rights to the head and left hooks to the body, Takayama rebounded strongly in the second round as he pressed forward with straight lefts and kept his momentum going in the following round.
With the victory, Takayama extended his unbeaten streak to eight, seven by KO, since turning pro in 2019. Furutani fell to an 11-7 win-loss tally with four KOs.
Imanaga shows convincing power
In one of the supporting cards of the event, former amateur star Taiga Imanaga of Ohashi Boxing Gym, ranked sixth in the Japanese lightweight division, stopped China’s Ma Qiang 2 minutes and 35 seconds into the first round of a scheduled eight-rounder in the Asian lightweight tournament.
With the win, Imanaga, 24, extend his unbeaten streak to five, including four KOs, after making a professional debut in June 2022. The 27-year-old Ma impaired to a 6-4-2 win-loss-draw record with four KOs.
